Ananda Earth Architecture originated in 2023 from the vision of establishing sustainable materials while simultaneously creating aesthetic and artistic spaces – harmonizing tradition and innovation. It is important to us that architecture is not only seen but also felt, inviting an experience that goes beyond the visual. These are spaces where one feels comfortable, contributing to an elevated quality of life.
Let's dive into my personal story...
In Austria, I, Katharina Lehmann, started my architectural journey at the Ortwein School for Art and Design in Graz, shaping my creative roots. This led to the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where I earned my architecture diploma in 2015.
In 2013, during my studies, an internship at Acme Architects in London became a pivotal moment. Actively contributing to the SAB – competition marked a turning point, allowing me to immerse myself in a project from initial sketches to the final structure – a cherished dream realized.

We approach our architecture projects with a holistic toolset.
DESIGNING SUSTAINABLE FUTURES
Earth projects across Africa & Europe
In 2017, my journey extended to Africa, where I volunteered to build a rammed earth school and bamboo community center in Ghana and Kenya. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for my profound connection with earth architecture. Inspired by sustainable materials, I continued learning through workshops and design-build projects such as a rammed earth library project by BIØN and several strawbale construction sites.

RECEIVING A GRANT & EVOLVING CONNECTIONS WITH WONDERFUL PEOPLE
The narrative progressed with the TISCHE grant, leading me to Anna Heringer’s team by the end of 2018. Contributing to projects like the RoSana Ayurveda Center and the Birthing Room in Hittisau. I took on design responsibilities for the Center for Sustainability in Bavaria and led efforts for the Education Campus in Ghana. This encompassed design, project management and on-site supervision. My concluding project at Studio Anna Heringer involved crafting the exhibition “Essential Beauty” at the ICO Museum, Madrid, venturing into new territory.
Collaborating with Martin Rauch, we organized a hands-on workshop for Harvard University students, enriching my architectural practice.

Ananda Earth Atelier reflects my commitment to implementing, realizing, and disseminating the art of architecture and traditional crafts through the use of natural materials, with a particular focus on earth and straw. My vision is rooted in creating buildings that endure for centuries, bringing warmth, joy, and happiness to people’s lives.
Driven by my desire to break free from the constraints of a conventional architectural setting, my decision to leave a secure working environment in favor of hands-on experiences in Africa marked a turning point. The dissatisfaction I felt behind the computer screen fueled my search for a more meaningful and fulfilling architectural practice. I wanted to gain a better understanding of architectural drawings by physically participating on a sustainable construction site.
SPECIALIZING IN EARTH & STRAW CONSTRUCTION
Sustainable Design Mastery
The impact of my journey was profound. Recognized as an earth-building specialist (Dachverband-Lehm) since May 2022 and undergoing training to become a specialized strawbale builder. I founded Ananda Earth Atelier with the goal of blending artistic design, harmonious spaces, and sustainable construction materials. This resolution represents a departure from conventional architectural practices, with the aim of creating enduring structures that stand the test of time, built with eco-friendly materials.

INNOVATING SYNERGETIC SPACES
Beyond Conventional Boundaries
Looking forward, Ananda Earth Atelier is set to push boundaries and challenge conventional norms. The focus remains on serving people with expertise in artistic design, creating synergetic spaces, and utilizing sustainable construction materials. I envision a future where buildings not only meet but exceed expectations, standing as a testament to craftsmanship and innovation.
At the heart of Ananda Earth Atelier is the voice of authenticity and passion. Through my experiences and expertise, the practice speaks to a commitment to sustainable, people-centric design that goes beyond the current moment, envisioning a future where architecture harmoniously coexists with the environment and the human experience.

Situated at the intersection of artistry, tradition, and innovation, Ananda Earth Atelier operates globally with a focus on earth and straw architecture. The business seeks to redefine the architectural landscape, challenging conventional norms and paving the way for a future where sustainable construction practices become the standard in building.
ANANDA
Ananda is a Sanskrit word that translates to “bliss” or “joy” in English. It holds deep significance in various spiritual and philosophical traditions, particularly in Hinduism and Buddhism. Ananda represents a state of profound happiness and contentment that goes beyond mere pleasure, often associated with spiritual awakening or enlightenment. It reflects a transcendent and enduring joy derived from a connection to one’s inner self or the divine.
EARTH
That’s the origin of everything (read the story behind at the About page). I’ve explored this material at its core, in Africa, with people living in earth houses. During this time I realized that an earth house is a space where you genuinely FEEL the essence of the material. Coming home with a newfound appreciation for using earth as a construction material. It’s not just about building with earth; it’s also about EXPERIENCING the earth walls. To feel at home, grounded, strong, and in a peaceful space.
ARCHITECTURE: That’s why we proudly embrace the title of atelier, even though we’re an architecture practice. For us, architecture is (also) art! Our mission is to spotlight aesthetic beauty, making it the centerpiece of our architectural endeavors. We engage in various mediums – from digital work and computing to traditional drawing, sketching, and crafting clay models – all with the goal of weaving creativity into the very fabric of our architectural creations.
ATELIER
An architecture atelier is more than a simple workshop; it’s a dedicated space where the art of design comes to life. It’s a studio, a creative sanctuary where architects shape visions into reality. Here, the emphasis isn’t solely on construction; it’s about elevating ART in architecture, placing creativity at the forefront. It’s a realm where blueprints transform into breathtaking structures, and every line drawn tells a story of innovation and design excellence.
